Art Chicago 2011
The Merchandise Mart

April 29 - May 1 2011.

There always seems to be something exciting going on in the art and design world, and the month of April has been plentiful; I've been busy having just returned from the 50th Annual Milan Furniture Fair. Chicago is preparing for its famous Art Chicago fair, showcasing the best in Modern and Contemporary art while featuring more than 100 exhibiting galleries from around the world including Canada.

Chicago is a city with a lush history of art practice and innovation, and it’s no surprise that the MMPI Group (owners of the show) has its roots deeply implanted in the windy city. The Chicago Merchandise Mart originally Marshall Fields was constructed in 1930 as a department store like no other. The Merchandise Mart was an architectural wonder in it’s day spanning two city blocks and rising 25 stories high. It is still the worlds largest commercial space with over 4.2 million sq/ft of space and up until 1998 was owned and operated by The Kennedy Family.

Chicago is also recognized for its world class cuisine - in between looking for the best and brightest in contemporary art, I highly recommend enjoying a meal at the famous Blackbird Restaurant, and the impossible to get into Goat and The Girl, both located in Chicago’s West Loop neighbourhood.
